Summer Talks in the National Library of Ireland 2016: Aoife O'Connor: Seen? Heard? Records of Children in Nineteenth Century Ireland

In this talk Aoife encourages you to search for your ancestor as a child, to help break down a brick wall, and to add valuable contextual information to your ancestor’s life. Children are found in not only in census and BMD records, they are also found scattered throughout military records, and in their thousands in prison, court and workhouse records. Looking beyond the records Aoife will explore the lives on children in nineteenth century Ireland in this informative talk. Aoife O’Connor is the editor of Small Lives: Photographs of Irish Childhood 1860-1970 based on the National Library exhibition of the same name . Aoife is a PhD candidate at The University of Sheffield, her thesis explores genealogist’s use of the records of the historic justice system and their reaction to finding ancestors who broke the law. She is especially interested in juvenile crime in 18th and 19th century Ireland.
