Carmel Gilbride gives her talk on Women in Rural Dublin, for the Irish Family History Centre on Culture Night.
We hear a lot about Dublin 'in the rare oul' times'. Until the 20th Century the city was concentrated almost entirely within the canals. Everything outside of this was considered suburbs, surrounded by rural countryside.
How did most people living in the county of Dublin experience life? What about the women whose personal experiences are often overlooked?

Carmel Gilbride is a professional Genealogist and has worked with the Irish Family History Centre, as both our Research Manager and now as one of our expert researchers, for several years. Genealogy, for Carmel, brings together her twin passions for family and history. Carmel has traced her father's side of the family back to the 1700s in Dublin using a strong family oral history tradition and parish vestry records. On her maternal side, she is one quarter American, which gives her a particular perspective on the Irish diaspora.
