by W.M. J. Fitzpatrick
Published in 1869, this is the fifth edition of WM. J. Fitzpatrick’s Curious Family History; or Ireland before the Union. Fitzpatrick was the well-known author of the Sham Squire and the Informers of 1798. This edition is notable for its inclusion of a piece called A Sensation Story as well as extracts from the unpublished diary of Lord Chief Justice Clonmell. Fitzpatrick’s main focus of study was the period in Ireland just prior to the Act of Union in 1801 and he displayed a talent for being able to draw together disparate strands of evidence to lend weight to his arguments. He was detective like in his examination of original documents. By combining many of the major events in Ireland prior to the Act of Union, like the 1798 Rebellion, with lesser known events and the personal recollections of individuals like Chief Justice Clonmell, Fitzpatrick describes a side of the Ireland at the end of the 18th Century that is less well known about.
